Radio programme featuring Nelson charity wins international award

A New Zealand Radio programme about health and sex education for young people with learning disabilities has scooped a presitigous international award.

One in Five: Health Click features Annette Milligan of Nelson company Health Click discussing the sensitive and often challenging topic of how to educate young people with learning disabilities about their bodies, and what is, and isn’t, ok in terms of sexual contact and relationships.

The programme, made by Radio New Zealand producer and presenter Katy Gosset, also features Nelson mum Karen and her teenage daughter Karlee, who has Down Syndrome. Karen uses Health Click’s resources to teach her daughter about showering and about how to stop any unwanted attention.

The programme has won a silver New York Festival award in the Human Relations category. The festival’s Radio competition rewards the best radio programmes in the world.

Annette Milligan, CEO of Health Click, said: ‘I am delighted that One in Five’s Health Click programme has won an international award. The award will help raise awareness of the challenges parents and children can face when tackling puberty and the teenage years with a learning disability. Sex and young disabled people is often an issue that is ‘swept under the carpet’ – yet research shows young people with learning disabilities are often the most vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Parents are not alone – they can find help out there, through local networks and groups, and resources like Health Click’s.’
